Web Univers Sonor

The title of the project, Univers Sonor, was chosen deliberately, as it consists of identical words in both Romanian and Catalan, in both form and meaning. This highlights the linguistic connection between the two Romance languages, which share approximately 1,500 words of this type, emphasizing the deep cultural ties between Romania and Catalonia.

The project has successfully merged tradition with multimedia technologies in a Univers Sonor that celebrates the cultural differences and similarities between the two regions. Its development was structured in several significant stages:

In Catalonia, the team carried out extensive research on the local traditional music, complemented by field recordings of the region’s sound heritage. The Can Clos Cultural Center, located in La Cellera de Ter (Girona), hosted workshops this summer focused on presenting traditional Romanian instruments such as the cobza, the caval, and the whistles of Oltenia. These workshops were accompanied by video projections on related topics, produced by the ISVOR Cultural Association.

In the commune of Malaia (Vâlcea County, Romania), children participated in interactive workshops where instruments from both cultures –whistles, flabiol, gralla, guitar, cobza, and various percussion instruments– were combined with modern technologies such as modular synthesizers. The activities included field recording sessions, listening, and recitals by students and workshop coordinators (members of Duo Kitharsis and Imago Mundi), fostering creativity among the participants.

The Univers Sonor project culminated with contemporary audiovisual creations by the Imago Mundi ensemble, which combine traditional elements and modern technologies with the researched themes. These works incorporate the instruments presented in the workshops and the sound recordings made throughout the project.

Univers Sonor is a cultural project organized by the ISVOR Cultural Association and co-financed by the National Cultural Fund Administration (AFCN).
